Power and Manual Wheelchairs, SmartDrive and ROHO® course

September 1 2016 – Wheelchairs Express opened its doors to O.T’s and P.T’s all over NSW. Together with Permobil and their wonderful presenter Maggie Love – the day was a great success!

Morning Session – There is no ‘one size fits all’ power wheelchair or seating system. In the morning session, attendees took an introductory
look into the factors that influence base selection (front, mid, and rear wheel drive) and power seat functions (PSF).
Current evidence for base selection, seat function usage, as well as pressure ulcer prevention were reviewed.
The course assisted clinicians and providers in knowing how to teach a client to effectively use the wheelchair to its
maximum performance, as well as examine the how PSF affect a person’s health, independence and quality of life.
Ultimately, attendees gained strategies to holistically assess and prescribe equipment that better meet the medical and
functional needs of their clients.

Afternoon Session – This course addressed recommendations in the guidelines that directly relate to the importance of properly fitting the
wheelchair to the person – a customised fit to the unique measurements and needs of the individual. How an individual
sits and fits in the wheelchair is a key predictor of safety, comfort, and independence, and, over the long term, will impact
the likelihood of secondary injuries. We also talked about how to maximize functional independence and minimise risk of
shoulder injuries with the revolutionary SmartDrive power assist device. Ultimately, attendees gained strategies to holistically
assess and prescribe equipment that better meet the medical and functional needs of their clients.
